Warehousing - Distribution - Sales - Merchandising - Key Accounting
Salmar Agencies was founded in March 1990 by the husband and wife team, Ken and Joan Powell. Ken was one of the founding Directors of Today Frozen Foods, and Joan had many years of experience in sales and administration.
Salmar Agencies started as a Perishable Foods Sales & Merchandising agency. In November 1991, Ken and Joan set up their warehousing & distribution centre for frozen, chilled and snack goods. They did this so they would have total control over the supply chain process from the moment they took delivery of all products.
As a result of their focus & attention to detail, Ken and Joan and the Salmar team played a significant role in assisting many small regional brands to become recognised nationally. Examples of these are Julies Frozen Foods, Frys Vegetarian Products, Natures Garden Vegetables, Pieman's Pantry, Ladismith Cheese, Midland Meats, Ma Baker Pies, Arista Dairies, Stellenbosch Cheese, Mexicorn, AB Products, BRM Brands, Blue Shirt Bakery, The Nice Co, Greyton Frozen Foods, La Mont Cheese.
Along with helping other brands grow, Salmar Agencies has warehoused, distributed, & merchandised various Pick 'n Pay and Shoprite/Checkers chilled & frozen House Brand products over the years.
They currently service large retailers like Shoprite/Checkers, Spar, Pick 'n Pay, Food Lovers Market, Wellness Warehouse, Dis-Chem and Makro in the Western Cape, as well as various Food Service companies and Health food stores, Restaurants, and Forecourts in the region.
In 2016 Shane, the eldest son of Ken and Joan, joined the team after leaving a career as a freelance food and decor photographer. As of 2020, Ken and Joan went into semi-retirement while still playing an essential part in the company's direction. Shane is now the company's managing director and has as much heart for building brands and companies as Ken and Joan ever did.
